What are the different expense splitting methods and when to use each?
Spese
Kai supports two automatic split methods plus a manual option. The choice lives in Group settings → Financial → Expense sharing and applies to every expense in the group.
Equal
Divides the expense evenly across all active members.
- Best for — shared consumables, group events, general maintenance
- Example — €200 fuel split 4 ways = €50 each
Proportional to ownership
Splits by each member's ownership percentage (or share count, if your group uses share-based ownership).
- Best for — major repairs, capital improvements, asset purchases
- Example — A 40%, B 30%, C 30% → €1,000 expense becomes €400 / €300 / €300
None (manual)
Turns off automatic splitting. The expense is recorded against whoever paid, with no automatic balance redistribution — useful when expenses are reimbursed outside Kai or when you want full manual control.
Setting it up
- Open Group settings
- Go to the Financial tab
- Under Expense sharing, pick Equal, Proportional to ownership, or None
- The change applies to all future expenses immediately
Document your choice clearly so members understand how their balances change after each expense.
